Stay Cool this Christmas with Festive Stress Busters

Easy things you can do to give yourself a little piece of peace this Christmas.

 

Christmas can be a stressful time and this year even more so, the challenges of employment along with worry about our future made 77% of respondents in a festive survey say they were planning to spend less on Christmas this year than in 2012.

 

Women seem to carry the most of the burden to find the right presents, manage difficult relations and the inevitable tensions that arise when families get together. It’s not just the presents, how about fitting in the carol services, hospitality and parties all accomplished looking beautiful in the perfect dress and all on a tight budget.

 

Here’s a radical suggestion: why not give yourself a present that will really nourish you? It’s needn’t cost anything, and it might just save your sanity this Christmas.

 

Here are some easy stress busters that even the most time pressed can do in the queue in the supermarket, while cooking dinner or when it all feels too much.

1.     If you have 30 seconds

Find a space to be still, even for a moment. Go and find a quiet room, step into the garden and take a long, deep breath. Letting go, even for a second, is a wonderfully healing thing.

 2.    If you have 2 minutes

If you have a few moments you can notice your breath, your inhalation and exhalation. Notice how your body feels. Notice any areas of discomfort or tension and breathe into them without judgment. Just breathe and acknowledge they have something to tell you.

3.     Set an intention

Be kind to yourself. Treat yourself as you would treat your best friend, with gentleness and compassion.

4.     Plan me-time

Organise some nourishing me-time before and after the festivities: a massage, a walk, music, yoga, running, time with friends.

5.     Ask for help

Ask for help! You don’t have to do it by yourself, ask for help when you want it and be as specific as possible. Please can you cut the carrots like this?

 

 

Prioritising your own well being at Christmas might sound selfish, but being kind to yourself will give you more time and more compassion for the people around you.
